As the Indian Premier League has kicked of, excitement on the cricket field has begun to ruse. But there's excitement off the field as well. Bookies are loving this like never before.
It's official now. Cricket is as much about entertainment as it's about the fours and sixes. But this glamourised form of the game is also about huge money. Both on and off the field. There is an entire world of bookmakers with stakes in each game running into hundreds of crores.
The Indian Premier League will have 59 matches played in 44 days with millions of cricket fans. All this adds up to big bucks for an underground world that closely keeps watch on every ball played. For each match, bookmakers take bets of about Rs 400 crore. So which are the top three teams of this season, according to them?
Ab tak jo bhi matches play huee hai usmein toh Kolkata, Chennai aur Hyderabad hi acchi lag rahi hai. (Among all the matches played so far, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad teams have been impressive.)
The season may have just begun but the odds are already set. Remember, the lesser the betting rate, the more favoured is the team to win.
Out of the eight teams playing in the tournament Kolkata Knight Riders are the current favourites at just below Rs 5. (Kolkata Knight Riders Rs 4.75)
They are followed by Chennai Super Kings at Rs 5.50. Hyderabad Deccan Chargers rank next at Rs 6. The odds for the Bangalore Royal Challengers, Mumbai Indians, Kings XI, Punjab, Delhi Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals range between Rs 7 to Rs 13.
Bets are placed on either full matches or the first ten overs, to help bookies and punters choose a favourite.
And since the IPL has players from across the world, bookies are also targetting individual players. Ricky Ponting, Sachin Tendulkar,Sanath Jayasuriya are the favourites.
But in a game that changes with every ball, the odds can change too. And while fortune may favour the brave, the bookies will favour the winners. |
